Air Officer's Education

This article from the Fall 1947 issue of Air University Quarterly Review provides an early perspective on the challenges in education and training that confronted officers in the early days of the US Air Force. Capt Robert O’Brien identifies seven subjects of critical importance to the new combatants known as Airmen. Many of those issues remain contested and debated today.

    Interesting that this appeared in print 65 years ago. The lessons that Capt O'Brien teaches are spot on for today. His recommendations on educatation to develop Air Power professionals are as applicable today as in 1947 when he penned this. He proposed a broad-based education for air warriors. This applies today, too, when flyers and cyber warriors take seats in the Pentagon and acquisition processes. We need to have our decision-makers be experienced and comfortable with rigorous application of logic and analysis of unintended consequences before making choices that shape our Air Power.
